Suicide, like many other issues in life serves to remind us of our limited abilities to know what goes on in the life and heart of those around us. Having officiated in a number of funeral services for those who had committed suicide, I was always saddened by thoughtless remarks and judgemental comments made by those in attendance. I am convinced that anyone who resorts to such a desperate act is not thinking rationally, but that does not earn condemnation, but sympathy and a renewed determination to be more understanding and supportive of those in our life who are going through difficult times. Thankfully, these victims of stress and depression are held firmly in the hands of a loving God who sees not only what is on the outside, but also what is in the mind and heart. We are never called to judge, but rather to love one another, even as Jesus loves us.
