: Suing Over “Stairway To Heaven. The estate of Randy California is suing Jimmy Page over copying the opening riff to “Stairway To Heaven” from Spirit’s “Taurus.” While there are similarities, the truth is that the descending chord progression goes back much further than either song. Used by The Chocolate Watch Band on “And She’s Lonely” in 1969, it was regularly employed by folk guitarists at least as far back as the 1950s. Here’s a 1959 version of “Cry Me A River” by fingerstyle pioneer Davy Graham that features the same haunting progression—long before Page or California were making records of their own.
