Sullivans Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941) Released in December - TopicsExpress

Sullivans Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941) Released in December 1941 in what were to be the final months of the Great Depression (in 1942 Roosevelt declared the Depression over as he rallied Americans to do their part for the war), Sullivans Travels follows a wealthy playboy screenwriter, John Sullivan, tired of producing light-weight films for Hollywood. He wants to create serious works of dramatic significance from now on. Determined to find the real America and chalk up some life experience, Sullivan leaves the luxurious comforts of Beverley Hills to become an everyman, joining the throngs of hobos searching for work and subsisting on charity and soup kitchens. In the hands of master screenwriter/director Preston Sturges, Sullivans Travels is a comedy masterwork parodying rich and poor in equal measure. It stars handsome go-to leading man Joel McRae in his best work since 1936s These Three and the lovely Veronica Lake, whose hairstyle had to be outlawed by the US government in wartime as women entered the workforce in droves. Lakes trademark hairstyle fell over one eye, which for women working in factories proved hazardous to their health.
