Summer is here and if June has been any indication of things to come its going to be a hot one which means your AC will be working hard the next few months. That means its time to make sure you get your annual Tune Up. Your A/C sits idle for months and dust and dirt can collect on your unit and cause it to malfunction and not run efficiently causing major repair bills and high energy costs. The majority of the signs will present themselves in the hot summer months. Be sure not to be caught Summer without cool and efficient A/C. Our maintenance checks are good for 3 months. If your unit breaks down within 3 months of a maintenance check due to something we missed you dont pay. Some notes for summer months. If it is nearly 100 degrees out, your AC will be working extremely hard to hold 75 degrees. Rule of thumb is to set it at something you can stand. Also, if you are gone all day, shutting off your unit versus turning the temp up is not the way to go. Set the temp somewhere near 80 so when you arrive home your unit will not have to work in overdrive just to catch up. This is extremely hard on your unit and contrary to most thinking not cost efficient. Also, remember to conserve your cold area. Limit the amount of times doors and windows are open and be sure your weather stripping on doors and seals on windows are in good condition. One home remedy to help your AC out is to spray your roof down with a hose or (if you have a garage entrance in the attic) open the attic door. For future planning, plants trees and shrubs that years from now will not only shade your home but your AC as well. Those of you with dogs, plant bushes or place a picket fence around your AC to prevent dogs (male) from urinating on the AC. The acid in the urine will eat away at the outer coil and comes with a hefty repair bill in replacing the Coil and the freon lost. This cost is even higher for those still operating older units that use R22 freon as its use is being slowly phased out by the EPA and is in short supply. Also, if your freon is low because of leaks this can cause your AC to freeze up and your pressure to run too high that will result in your unit shutting down. Lastly, one of the best things you can do is spend a little more and buy a good return vent filter. This captures all the dust and allergens in your home and helps to prevent them from returning to the AC unit to real havoc. Its use is a lot like a car air filter but needs to be replaced at least every 3 months depending on the quality you buy. A good filter will cost around $8. Call AirPro today. 865-247-2980.
