Summer is here in the Texas Hill Country. So far, we have been very blessed with beautiful weather and mild temperatures but many are spending lots of time outside either working or playing. We would like to remind you to be careful and know the signs & symptoms of heat illness. Heat exhaustion starts slowly and if not quickly treated can progress to heatstroke which requires immediate medical care and can be fatal. Signs & Symptoms of heat exhaustion: increased thirst, weakness, fainting, muscle cramps, nausea & vomiting,irritability, headache, increased sweating, clammy skin, elevation of body temperature to less than 105 F. Signs & Symptoms of Heatstroke: Severe headache, weakness, dizziness,confusion, rapid breathing and heartbeat, loss of consciousness leading to coma, seizures, may not be sweating, flushed hot dry skin, elevation of body temperature to 105 or higher. What to do; With symptoms of heatstroke, seek emergency medical care immediately!! Go indoors or into the shade immediately. get undressed and lie down with feet slightly elevated. Get in cool bathwater or spray with mist from garden hose. Sip cool, clear fluids frequently.For vomiting, if laying down, turn head sideways to prevent choking. Prevention: Drink plenty of fluids, even if you arent thirsty before & during any activity in hot, sunny weather. Wear light-colored, loose clothing. Avoid heavy activity outdoors during the hottest hours of the day & go indoors whenever you begin to feel overheated.
