Summer nights in Boulevard Manor ... if we werent running through the sprinklers or eating homemade popsicles our mothers made (by freezing Kool-Aid and sticking tongue depressors in each compartment of the ice cube tray), we were having other fun. Wed catch fire flies (or lightning bugs -- depending on your preference) and put them in glass half-gallon milk bottles or mayonnaise jars. Wed use clothespins to secure playing cards (or baseball cards -- theyd probably be worth a lot now) to our bike fenders and create noisemakers. Or, wed play ring alevio, a sort of team version of hide-and-seek. Parents would sit on the stoop and visit with the neighbors. Or theyd try to resist our entreaties when the Good Humor man showed up on his tricycle-propelled ice box. Like tonight, when there is still plenty of daylight at 8 oclock in the evening, wed keep playing until it was totally dark. G-o-o-od memories...
