SunSays: THE BRAVE FIGHT of a frail old man against illness is being turned from a tragedy into farce. Rumours and speculation are rife both here and abroad, where millions are praying for our beloved Madiba’s recovery. What is the truth about his condition? The Presidency, which has been less than candid in the past, keeps telling us 94-year-old Madiba is “critical but stable”. Feuding members of the family – in support of an urgent bid to have the graves of Mandela children re-sited – have gone to court claiming the former president is in a “vegetative state” (coma). A document claims they are preparing to take doctors’ advice and “switch him off”. Spokesman Mac Maharaj responds this way: “We are not saying that it’s true or not true”! But an old struggle comrade, Denis Goldberg, says he spent time with Madiba last week and the old man recognised him and moved his eyes. Goldberg says doctors told him they will only act if Madiba suffers organ failure. Now it turns out that the “vegetative state” claim was an exaggerated “submission” to the court and not actually “evidence”! No wonder Archbishop Desmond Tutu says the family feud is “spitting in Madiba’s face”! One has to ask the question: Why should the Presidency anyway be the one to tell us – or not tell us – what is going on? The only people properly qualified to give accurate and timely information about the progress of Madiba’s illness are the doctors in charge of his treatment. Instead of second-hand accounts, isn’t it time for these nameless physicians to speak for themselves?
