Sunday 16th March Result - YEL Cup Quarter Final U10s Team DNF 6 - 0 Bestwood Rangers Scorers: Ethan (3), Josh (2), Charlie G Clive Taylor reporting... There was a clear turning point in this cup tie. It was almost precisely at the point the gentleman next to me wondered out loud What happens if its a draw at full time? To name him would be wrong as either side of him we were taking the question very seriously. It was 6 or 7 minutes into the second half and with hindsight we should have been wondering if the game would end at all as we were now on our third matchball, DNF had stepped up a gear and were troubling the hedge behind the Bestwood goal. For its part the hedge was taking everything that was thrown (well kicked and headed really) at it and had given new meaning to possession football DNF had edged the first half, Jericho having had a well struck penalty very well saved after Ethan had been felled by the goalkeeper and a little later Ethan hitting the bar. It had been a first half packed with effort but very few chances. DNF had played the ball through the midfield with Bestwood playing a more direct game using the wind at their backs to play the ball long to their industrious number 9. After the recent goalkeeper-go-round of recent weeks, Charlie J was back and made a couple of good stops in a largely drama-free half as he, Dylan and Charlie R took care of business at the back. Anyway as minds on the touchline wandered as to how the game might be decided in the event of a draw or a lack of matchballs, DNF found the target - and how. Ethan, helpfully, was on the spectator side, outside of the box. If you drew a straight line from where I was to the goalpost he would have been on it. I know this because when he unleashed his shot I had a perfect view, seeing it curve outside that line then curl deliciously around the goalkeepers outstretched dive to nestle in at the far post. A great goal. A minute later it was two. Jericho picked the ball up on the left wing just inside the Bestwood half and, evading challenge after challenge, went on a mazy run that took him deep into the right hand side of the penalty area where he forced the ball to Ethan. With just the goalie to beat he made no mistake. 2-0. The two quick goals had knocked the stuffing out of a Bestwood team who had no subs to bring on with fresh legs. Alfie was galloping up and down the right wing enjoying the additional freedom. He had played a really good game having had to roll his sleeves up and tackle back in the first half. From one such run he hit a cross shot with customary power that squirmed under the goalkeeper. Charlie G was in the right place at the right time. 3-0. The fourth was a great DNF goal. James broke up play in the right centre back position midway into the DNF half and passed the ball to Charlie G on the left wing. He switched the play to Ethan slightly right of centre who drilled it in. It was Ethans hat trick and it had been a masterclass in finishing as I recall saying at the time. By now the game was won and Ash more than anyone must have been pleased as his goal bonus was safe and sound. A point he alluded to to Josh when he hit the post, foolishly tempting fate. After some more battling from Alfie on the right the ball reached Josh who slammed it in for 5-0 and followed it up with a drilled effort into the bottom corner to round off the scoring. 6-0. The boys were jubilant and Ash, once again, was broke.
