Sunday 9th March 2014 DR LUVENI HEADS THE TOUR TO LAU GROUP The Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni is leading a government delegation for 3 weeks tour to Lau Group starting from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 29th March 2014.The delegation comprises of officials from various government ministries and departments. While explaining about this tour, Minister Luveni said that the women’s groups in all the islands she is visiting will be assisted with some sort of income generating projects. “This would be a comprehensive visit and will have representatives from the various ministries and we will be having dialogues with the communities and help the islands in development programsparticularly in sustaining their infrastructural facilities like water, electricity and transportation. The officials from Prime Minister’s Office and Fiji Revenue Customs Authority are also part of the team to Lau. “There will be engineers from public works departments and health staff, we are looking at around 40 government officials that will be visiting 14 islands in the Lau Group.We will be assisting the women groups in all these islands with income generating programsthrough presenting materials and equipment to establish projects like Virgin Coconut Oil, Bee Keeping, handicrafts, fishing nets and even provide them with tailoring skills.Those villages in Lau thatdidn’t have sewing machines will also be given to them with the hope to help them sew school uniforms. “We will also deliver building materials for the women center extensions and there will be opening of women resource centre in Lau. We will have one to one consultations with the communities and also launch the zero tolerance violence free community campaign. But of course after the launching the communities have to undergo 12 months of training and awareness. The tour has programs packaged to promote economic and social development in the Lau Group,” Dr Luveni explained. The islands that Dr Luveni is scheduled to visit on the tour are as follows: • Yaroi village, Matuku • Tovu village, Totoya • Nuku village, Moala • Vanuavatu • Lakeba • Tuvuca • Vanuabalavu • Oneata • Moce • Komo • Namuka • Kabara • Fulaga • Vatoa • Ono-i-Lau -END-
