Sunday November 24,2013 - Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Jakoyo Midiwo, has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to turn a deaf ear and not listen to the advice from his lieutenants who are urging him to break ranks with the West (Britain, US and France) over his ICC cases and face East (China and Russia). Speaking to one of the local dailies on Saturday, Midiwo who is also the Gem MP and a cousin to former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, said it absurdity for Kenya to break ranks with the West who are our main trade partners. “It is going to be mistake of monumental proportion is he heeds to their calls. Such will fail and will be totally counter-productive. How can a government that can hardly feed its people imagine of intimidating the West?” Midiwo posed. Midiwo also said the plan by Jubilee lieutenants of expelling over 10,000 British soldiers who train in Kenya yearly and pulling Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) out of Somalia will only serve to jeopardise Kenya’s national security not the US’s or Britain’s. The fiery lawmaker also warned of a major economical damage if Kenya wages war with US and Britain. “When you say that you want to look East, you must first consider minor but important facts like: Britain is a key importer of our tea. Where will we sell the tea? These people are being myopic. Politically, it may be the right move but economically it’s suicidal,” the MP said. But Senate Majority leader, Prof Kithure Kindiki downplayed Midiwo’s remarks saying any Kenyan who thinks that cutting ties with the West will affect the economy is a fool who should go back to school. “I know somebody makes us believe that there will be dire consequences, the correct position is our balance of trade with some of these countries is hugely skewed in their favour,” Kindiki said.
