Sunday Sermon: Titus 1:5 If Paul’s message to Titus had to be - TopicsExpress

Sunday Sermon: Titus 1:5 If Paul’s message to Titus had to be summarized using a maximum of three words, I believe it could be called: “Stay in Crete” (1:5). This initial instruction at the beginning of the letter suggests that Titus had likely told Paul that he wanted to leave that island assignment. If that is the case, it certainly would seem to be a normal response from a young pastor who was facing so many major problems and difficult people to deal with. In our day to day we often are assigned to struggling or challenging situations that we have to deal with. Many do not survive and do not continue into greatness after being “thrown to the lions.” Yet the Apostle reminds Titus that he left him at Crete for the very reason to straighten out the problems and to appoint leaders to help him. There are likely two reasons why Titus needed to remain in that place. First, Crete needed Titus. Unless someone has the fortitude and boldness to confront challenging situations, they will never be resolved at all. Second, not only did Crete need Titus, but it is likely that Titus needed Crete. Although the Bible doesn’t give us the personal growth of this young pastor, we know from other Scripture that it is during such seasons of trials and adversity that we all mature in Christ. May we who are often tempted to flee opportunities and assignments at the first sign of trouble take courage from young Titus who dared to make a difference in that community. Stay where you are!
