Sunday Thoughts Strange, but its true, if you were to search the Bible to find where the word Conservative is used, that word cannot be found. And the only times the word Liberal is used, it describes how a person should give to the Lords work in the world. So what motivates Christians to be so concerned with being identified as Conservative or Liberal? Throughout his ministry when Jesus engaged the Conservatives (Pharisees, Scribes, Sadducees) and the Liberals (Herodians, Zealots), he sought to direct their lives and energies to the truth of Gods Kingdom beyond the narrow, parochial concerns of their vested interest. These groups in Jesus world mirror similar groups today; they identify and hold a position on a political, religious or economic spectrum, and fight to hold it. By contrast Jesus said, You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free. We can find Truth to live by, by being liberal with any truth claim we encounter, engage and reflect upon it, consider where it may be truthful. When the idea bears the burden of Truth, conserve it and incorporate it into your thinking, values and lifestyle. Jesus also said of himself, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. What a contribution Christians could make to any conversation if we were to seek the Truth and bring that to bear on issues we discuss.
