Sunday was definitely another milestone (and miracle) to add to this incredible journey! Nathan RAN the Army Ten Miler Race in DC! He had the perfect escort team which included ECU ROTC buddy, Ted Brennis, his mentor Dan Sparr, Company Commander Capt Adam Cowan from 1st ID (whom he served with in Afghanistan and is also a wounded warrior) and, of course, his sister Bridget. The group quickly realized they needed to form a protective barrier around Nathan to discourage other runners & spectators from patting him on the back or trying to give him a high 5! Nathan describes the blade legs as running on tip toes so, theres not a lot of surface area for balance. In preparation for the race, Nathan had only run for 5 miles at a time. His last 5 mile run, he fell 4 times. On Sunday, he ran 10 miles, on hilly streets, passed the monuments of our nations capital and had no falls at all! My task was to meet him at the Fiinish Line with his wheelchair. He expected to be physcially exhausted at the conclusion of the race. Well, I did have the wheelchair and he did sit but, he was hardly exhausted....more like energized! Bridget had run 5ks and 8ks before but never 10 miles. She said it was the easiest race! She was so focused on Nathan that she paid no attention to herself or any fatigue that she should have felt. Kevin & Kasey were our spotters and scoped things out so alert us when they were headed to the Finish Line. One of Nathans friends from high school, church and ECU, Kristin, had t-shirts made for us all to commemorate the special event. Nathan enjoyed seeing Col Lambert before race. Col Lambert met Nathan and the medics in the field hospital shortly after he was wounded in Afghanistan. It was then that Nathan challenged the Colonel to meet him in DC in 2013 for this race.......thanks, Colonel for making the trip! Before we headed home, I told Nathan that I spent the 2 hours and 12 minutes praying and reciting Isaiah 40:31 over and over...those that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. The will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not be weary, they will walk and not faint. His response to me...well, mom, it definitely worked. Praise God! Our hearts are grateful for so many who have lifted us up in prayer these past 15 months. You have made SUCH a difference! thank you to everyone who traveled to participate in this race with Nathan.
