Sunshine, NC Farm Apprentice A Way of Life Farm A Way of Life Farm is seeking one more full time apprentice for the 2014 season (March - October)! As we gear up for the year, we are excited to form our team that will be instrumental to the success of the farm. As full time farmers, we are looking forward to share our knowledge and experiences with you through this hands-on learning opportunity. Please read the following description and we hope to hear from you soon! Farm Description: A Way of Life Farm is a diverse small farm in the foothills of WNC. They raise vegetables, strawberries and pasture-raised pork for sale and are establishing perennials including blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and a wide array of fruit trees., as well as bees. A combination of sustainable practices including bio-intensive raised beds, keyline plowing, and permaculture design are used. Their products are sold through farmers’ markets, CSAs, and restaurants. Farming really is a way of life! Interns take part in all aspects of the farm from vegetable seed to harvest, livestock care, marketing, and infrastructure projects, but should expect that the vast majority of time is spent growing vegetables. Interns work 45-50 hours/week with one long weekend off per month and a week of paid vacation in July/August. We respect your time and life away from the farm, trying our best to stick to a pre-arranged schedule. We aim to offer information and skills that will give you confidence to start your own farm. We work together and explain the hows and whys of various tasks as they are learned. As the season progresses, interns are given increased responsibilities around the farm. We ask interns to determine personal goals for their time on our farm and we work with them to make the internship a valuable experience. Field trips to other farms through CRAFT will provide a broader perspective. Contact us for further details and an application. Qualifications: We are looking for curious interns with good communication skills and eagerness to work hard. The ability to work quickly and efficiently with a group as well as taking responsibilities and working independently are important. A serious interest in farming for livelihood will make this internship most valuable to you. Compensation: A personal camper-trailer with a full kitchen, electricity, running cold water, outdoor shower, outhouse bathroom, food from the farm, $400/month stipend, with a $50 raise every 3 months, and most importantly- good information and practical experience.
