Super Typhoon Haiyan is expected to cost insurers US$700 million in the Philippines, said risk modeling firm AIR Worldwide. Across the world, insurance claims for natural catastrophes have been on the rise. And three of the top five costliest natural disasters in the past five years were in Asia. These are the Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which killed 15,840 and cost US$210 billion; the Thai floods in the same year, which killed 813 people and cost US$40 billion in damages; and the 2008 earthquake in China, which had a death toll of 84,000 and cost US$89 billion.
