Supporters of Bill 49, Yesterday marked another milestone in our fight to eliminate the unjust practice of tip-outs in Ontario as the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly met at Queen’s Park and listened to statements by people affected by tip-outs. One person noted the lack of accountability and transparency in the tip-out process, and talked about the dish breakage fees servers have to pay, regardless of whether any dishes were broken or not. One of the most egregious stories came later in their statement when they noted that they are required to pay 4% of gross sales to the house. For perspective, if a server sold $1000 worth of food during their shift, they would be required to hand over $40. If they only made $8.90 an hour, they would only earn $31.20 after eight hours of work. “What’s the point of working if I’m paying my own wage?,” one of the speakers asked. The committee heard from restaurant owners, banquet hall employees, and legal experts, all of whom spoke in favour of the bill. A number of industry associations also spoke to the committee, but had a difficult time providing any evidence to their claims that the bill added more bureaucracy to the system or that the bill would somehow harm tourism in Ontario. The speakers at the committee brought to light a number of issues that Bill 49 would rectify. The bill will go to clause-by-clause consideration in the committee next Wednesday. If you would like to come to Queen’s Park to watch the proceedings, please let our office know before Wednesday. Thanks again for your support, Michael D. Prue MPP – Beaches-East York
