Suppose we needed 2 Million Acre Ft a year to keep the region in water supply. How might we get it? Well, import from other peoples watersheds (OPW)-- ok, we know that works but a) its expensive, and b) only when OPWs have water to give. If we captured the runoff from our our landscapes Los Angeles alone would contribute 12% of the TOTAL water needed in the region. Hmmm. Sounds like a case for Sponge Gardens. Math geeks, here it is: We asked: What if we captured the rainwater that would runoff landscapes and kept it in soil? What % of the total need would that represent? 2MAF = 2M x 326,000 gal/AF = 652 BN Gal This is approximately the amount of water annually imported to SoCal Region. 2MAF = 652 Billion Gal of water 80 Billion Gal of water generated in one season in LA County alone 80 BN = 12.3% of 652 BN
