Surita Louwrens Coetzer Manhunt after reign of terror in Limpopo:: 20\01\14 Despite a massive police hunt under way, no arrests have been made after eight armed robbers raided three farms and raped two women in Polokwane, Limpopo this weekend. Limpopo police said two of the suspects had been identified in Tagana’s Hoek near Letsitele in Tzaneen on Saturday, and their arrests were imminent. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the gang had started their reign of terror around midday on Saturday when they attacked and raped a 32-year-old woman, before stealing two rifles, a pistol and R300 in cash. “Their next stop was at another farm just few metres away. The three members of the gang allegedly raped a 59-year-old Zimbabwean maid,” said Mulaudzi in a statement. “The suspects then proceeded to another farm where they managed to steal electrical appliances including DVDs, before disappearing into the bush on foot.” He added that some of the stolen goods and money had been dropped while the robbers were fleeing. “Community members are urged to inform the police if they see people selling suspected stolen appliances,” he said. These incidents follow the murder of woman identified as 30-year-old Melinda Bam (not the former Miss South Africa) during a robbery on a farm near Gravelotte in Limpopo in June last year. The robbers fled with cellphones and cash after they had killed Bam and wounded her boyfriend. A study conducted by Institute for Security Studies senior researcher Johan Burger has found commercial agriculture is in crisis and that farm attacks were worsening the situation. “It is crucially important for government to prioritise the security of our farming community and to resume the monitoring and reporting of these attacks and murders,” said Burger in the study. “We will all be worse off if the government continues to ignore this pressing problem,” Burger added.
