Surprising my mom by telling her I couldnt get off for thanksgiving, but then flying in and getting home without her knowledge :) (skip the first 45s of the video, and bare with my voice and laughter, please). I actually had an incredible journey filled with random acts of kindness from strangers and friends. First, when I was trying to figure out how to get home from the airport (since my arrival time was so late public transportation would have closed), my friend from Northwestern offers to rent a car and drive me back home. Not wanting to bother him, we decided I would take a shuttle from the airport to a hotel nearby and call Uber from there. HOWEVER, every hotel I tried did not allow solicitors and I was forced to return to the airport. Having failed to summon an Uber, a brother stayed on the phone/text with me until 1:00 am trying to figure out a solution to my problem of being stranded, at the sacrifice of his own sleep and studies. Meanwhile, an incredibly kind hotel shuttle driver noticed me being sketchy at the hotel and offered his help. I asked him if there were any McDonalds or cafes within walking distance of the hotel, since I was trying to summon an Uber (but he didnt know that). There wasnt any, but he offered to go out of his way to drop me off at Terminal 1 back at the airport, saying theres a Starbucks there ;_; And not only that, he offered to wait for me to get my Starbucks and then head to his original location so I dont have to walk as far T_T I didnt have the heart to tell him I wasnt actually a client at the hotel, so I refused his offer, despite his concerns. Looking back now, I probably should have just told him the truth :( I hope he wasnt waiting for me... After a few more failed ideas, I just decided to sleep at the airport until the morning, when Metra would be up and running. It was surprisingly comfortable and warm! I hid in the bathroom for a good hour before realizing nobody cared about a few stray people. Thats when I decided to get on Metra and finally head home. However, both my credit and debit cards were rejected when I was trying to get a ticket :( The conductor spent 10 minutes patiently trying to help me. When my cards got declined over and over again, he let me on the train for free, and was incredibly nice throughout the entire situation! Finally, there were so many kind strangers who helped me figure out my bus routes and transfers, and who made friendly conversation in the middle of all their guidance and friendliness ;_; I was so incredibly blessed to have all this happen during what could have potentially been a very sketchy and depressing situation.
