Suva opened its Battle Of Giants campaign on an impressive note - TopicsExpress

Suva opened its Battle Of Giants campaign on an impressive note this afternoon thumping Nadroga 4-0 in the second match of the tournament at Govind Park. The Gurjit Singh coached side did not lack patience and confidence and played like a well oiled machine. Striker Inia Boko found the back of the net in the 19th minute after connecting well with a Ravinesh Singh cross. Nadroga toiled hard for the equaliser but solid defence and good goalkeeping by Emori Ragata kept the scores intact till half-time. The Whites dominated the second half and defender Ravinesh Dass in his desperation to clear the ball away placed it into his own goalmouth in the 67th minute to extend Suvas lead. Captain Pita Rabo nailed the third goal while Boko got his second in the dying minutes after back-heeling a Nickel Chand cross. Suva had to replace goalie Ragata after he developed stomach cramps midway in the second half. Replacement Ulaiasi Tamanisau played a sound game and made two good saves in the air. Coach Singh said his players took advantage of their chances and the four goal cushion should give them the edge in the pool. The boys played very well today and utilised their chances in front of goal. I was not expecting a 4-0 margin since Nadroga is a good team and they played very well in the first half. We applied more pressure in the second half and they were forced to make more mistakes. The boys were able to score three goals in the second half and we are happy to start off on a positive note. Nadroga coach Joseph Nitya Nand was disappointed with the outcome and said his players did not stick to their game plan. We played one of the most consistent teams of this season and needed to do the basics right. The first half performance was satisfactory but in the second half we made so many silly mistakes in defence and were punished accordingly. Suva was the better team of the day and full credit to them for the win. Suva faces Navua in its second match at 1pm tomorrow while Nadroga will play Lautoka at 3pm.
