Swedish support to advance gender equality in Albania Tirana 3 November 2014: The Government of Sweden announced further support to advance gender equality in Albania by contributing 20 MSEK (2,6 MUSD) to the gender outcome of the “Government of Albania- UN Programme of Cooperation”. The Swedish funding will go to address issues such as: strengthening of institutions to promote gender equality and ensure gender mainstreaming, including gender responsive planning and budgeting, effective response to gender-based violence, and economic empowerment of women. An agreement was signed by Lisa Fredriksson, Head of Swedish Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Zineb Toumi -Benjelloun. Ms Fredriksson underscored: “We have witnessed and highly appreciated the work on domestic violence (supporting legislation, coordinated work in municipalities, data collection on domestic violence), as well as the work on women´s economic empowerment, gender statistics, property rights, women´s political participation. I´m very happy to confirm our partnership today by signing an addendum to the agreement between Sweden and the One UN, adding more funds - 20 million SEK, approx. 2,6 million USD - to assist Albania in reaching its full potential, by creating an enabling environment and empowering women and men to have the same power and possibilities to shape society and their own lives.”
