*Sweet and Sour Candies of Childhood* The moving world outside - TopicsExpress

*Sweet and Sour Candies of Childhood* The moving world outside the train window seemed to freeze. In the accelerating train, she rewound her memories to her past. She plunged herself into the small basket of her happy childhood, neatly tied with the strings of her memories. * The angst she felt at the late coming of Riya at the school gate or Riyas covertly taking a bite or two from the chocolate she had preserved for herself. The little prayer they said every day on the way back to home, to get their favorite dish for lunch. And the cheerful smiles they gave each other, if that dish turned out to be Maggi! The milk she used to secretly pour from her glass into Riyas when she was not watching. The day they cried together when the head of their first and last Barbie popped out of it’s body while they were combing her hair, and their good-for-nothing-attempts to fix it back. The days when they used to wrap their Mummas chunni around themselves to fake a saree. And wear her bangles to play teacher-teacher. And the arguments which sprang up every time, to decide who would be teacher. Poor Riya never won! The evenings Riya would come back home sobbing, as Nehas friends would put her in kachchi mitti in the neighbourhood games. Their first attempt to bring a gift (it was a lipstick) for their mothers birthday by smashing their earthenware piggy bank and collecting the coins. And the return gifts dad brought for them - the Camlin water colours. The day she slapped and fought with that mischievous boy in their school van, for teasing her little sister for her boy-cut hair. And the day they themselves pulled each others hair over the TV remote! The bonus peck they got from Mumma, reserved for whoever completed the homework first. The special Saturday nights when they slept only after hearing Dads bedtime story. Their sneak-peeking of Mummas K-series at night, and trying to decipher the story by listening to the dialogues from the other room. The day they went to the nearby park to secretly bury Riyas fallen tooth. And the time when she used to say to each other I will never marry and leave you. * Remembering all of this, she was lost in those sweet and sour candies of childhood. The childhood candies she shared with her sweet sister, and the candies they could not enjoy together now. She felt his arm on her shoulder. Turning back, she smiled at her husband and whispered, I cannot wait to meet my family now. Your wait is over. We have reached the station. Riya is waiting outside, he smiled back at her. ~Kunika Diwan #TAWfanarchy
