Sydney Morning Herald Letter of the Day 28th May 2014 Universities already compete for students smh.au/comment/smh-letters/universities-already-compete-for-students-20140527-zrpar.html I am totally mystified. What is Christopher Pyne talking about when he claims that charging fees will increase competition between universities (‘‘New vision for education: opportunity and equity’’, May 26)? I was head of a school of computer science in a Group of Eight university for 12 years and we competed intensively to get the best students: constantly redeveloping courses, revamping labs with the latest technology, building reputation by supporting our students in international competitions (which they often won), having university students go out and talk to school students, sponsoring robotics in schools with courses for both school students and their teachers, running workshops at the university for primary school girls to get in early with the idea that technology development was something girls could be passionate about. What sort of competition will fee flexibility bring: universities vying with each other in claiming to miraculously offer the same educational opportunities as a competitor university, but at a 30 per cent discount (and no doubt with a bonus set of steak knives)?
