Sylmar’s Marcus Gandy has opponents on the run By Gerry Gittelson, Special to the Daily News Sylmar (8-3) has won six in a row since transfer running back Marcus Gandy became eligible, and the sophomore has helped transform the Spartans into a City Section Div. II contender. Gandy has rushed for 673 yards on 68 carries with 14 touchdowns — including runs of 72, 86 and 60 yards — heading into Friday’s quarterfinal against visiting Chatsworth (4-7). “He’s a very strong athlete, and he’s making a major impact,” Sylmar coach John Brazil said. “Plus, he’s still learning the game, still young. The more comfortable he is with our system, the better he is going to get.” Sylmar also is getting a boost from Littlerock transfer Malik Martin, a sophomore who gained eligibility the same week as Gandy. Martin has four interceptions, including three in an playoff-opening win over L.A. Marshall. “He’s a big-time player,” Brazil said. Some of the other key players on defense are linebacker Devon Parks, defensive back Shontee Smith and defensive linemen Jose Holguin, Daniel Cervacio and Josh Granatos.
