Syrian Social Media ****storm Advisory: In the coming days there - TopicsExpress

Syrian Social Media ****storm Advisory: In the coming days there will be a lot of Fb posts & tweets on your collective walls. (I mean A LOT.) There will be commentary in Arabic and English. There will be depressing articles in newspapers about Geneva II and votes and delegations and a splintered opposition and of course the allegedly criminal regime (please emphasize allegedly). There will be grand statements from the fresh ex-members of opposition parties who will declare that they quit their responsibilities because of 1) principle, 2) to fight the corruption within, 3) because they couldnt stand Moustafa Sabbagh anymore, 4) because they love Syria and the Syrian people too much to go to Geneva II. Beware of such manipulative statements. No one outside Syria loves Syria more than themselves. The effect will trickle down and people you for some reason that you call friends will begin to debate and play the popular Syrian game, politicians & analysts. Their arguments will last for many, many comments. No one will get to any useful result. Through this stormy period everyone should remember that this — THIS — is all noise. No one in Syria ever cared about Facebook or Twitter. And they lost interest (and trust) in the regime three years ago and in the political opposition since Mouaz al-Khatib left. The revolution didnt begin because people wanted an Etilaf or because people wanted foreign intervention or Islamic extremists. It began because of a collective call for freedom and dignity. That call will be a reality for Syria one day but unfortunately not this week. (And most likely, many years.) So brace yourself. Dont raise your blood pressure or fight with your mother. Its not worth it and more importantly it wont matter. Practice meditation and repeat this mantra: This is not about me. This is not about me. This is not about... Then log off Facebook and think about how you can do something concrete to help a Syrian in need. Then go do it.
