T.R.E.C. Have you ever seen the movie October Sky? We had a real-life version growing up in South Troy. While we were building model rockets from kits, this one boy was designing and building them from scratch. He devised and built a podium with an electronic switch to ingnite the rockets, so he wouldnt have to be in the dangerous vicinity of lighting a fuse; in other words, ignition by remote. He could be found in the gravel lot off First Street and Monroe launching one of his experiments. Rumor had it that one time he fired a rocket, and after lift-off it flew high into the sky, crossing the Hudson River and landing in the Watervliet Arsenal. He formed an organization named T.R.E.C. or the Troy Rocket Engineering Club for fellow rocket enthusiasts. At Troy High in the freshman year of science class 61, he submitted his most ambitious design. An all metal 3 stage rocket, with a compartment for a mouse and an 8 millimeter movie camera. Designed by him, machined by him. Like the movie, Ive often wondered if he fulfilled his dreams and went to work for NASA as it was preparing for the moon-shot. His name ... Joey Crater.
