TACO BELL PAYS $1.1 million for the LIBERTY BELL Story by: Arlene Cantzik Washington Post 3/18/2014 Taco Bell pays $1.1 million for the Liberty Bell for advertising and promotional purposes. The national monument has been leased back to the US dept of Interior for $1.00. In the agreement the U.S dept of Interior, Parks Dept. will be responsible for all upkeep, maintainence and security for the life of the 99 year lease. As outlined in the lease LIBERTY BELL will remain at its present home in Philadelphia, Pa. Taco Bell will own all rights to the bell including all promotional, likeness and advertising. The company will unveil the new TACO BELL LIBERTY BELL sometime in May through a series of advertisements that may also include the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. This is just the first salvo being fired by Corporate America to purchase historical landmarks or strike naming rights agreement with the US government says Ralph Metzgers, Assistant Deputy Director of the US Parks Department. We will soon see companies such as Rice-a~ronni who is currently in negotiations with the cash strapped State of California for naming rights to the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. It has been suggested that a deal be struck with Ford Motor Co. for the naming rights of the Lincoln Memorial as major renovations will soon be needed and the infusion of corporate revenue would be an answer to preserving this national treasure.
