TADITIONAL RULER SEEKS NAVAL PRESENCE TO FIGHT PIRACY - Chief Effiong Archanga, the paramount ruler of Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, has called on the Federal Government to establish a naval base in the area. Archanga made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom on Monday. He said the establishment of the base "will put an effective check’’ on activities of sea pirates and other criminals on the Ibeno waterways. The monarch suggested that in the interim, the Nigeria Navy in the area should commence the deployment of their gunboat in the creeks of Ibeno, Eastern Obolo, Eket and Mbo zones. He said that pirates had caused socio- economic hardship on the people of the area adding that they now carry out their fishing activities on the Cameroon waterways. Archanga said this had exposed the fishermen and women to security challenges and danger.
