TAKE A HIKE! There’s just something about being outside that relieves stress and makes everything seem better. Add in the release of adrenaline and endorphins from the exercise during a hike and you are likely to be in a good mood for the rest of the day. However, hiking isn’t only good for the mind. There also are numerous health benefits. According to the American Hiking Society (americanhiking.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Heath-Benefits-of-Hiking-fact-sheet.pdf), “hiking is one of the best ways to lose weight and is a method of stabilizing cholesterol levels.” You burn 100 calories for every mile you walk, and the faster your pace, the more calories you will burn. Hiking and walking also can help reverse the negative effects of osteoporosis, according to the society. This activity increases bone density and slows the rate of calcium loss. The society also notes that physical activity like hiking lowers blood pressure 4-10 points and can reduce the amount of insulin someone with diabetes needs. Hiking also can improve balance, strengthen the core and tone your muscles, especially the lower body. It targets and strengthens the quads, hamstrings, glutes and calf muscles. For longer treks, where gear and a backpack is required, the added weight will give you an even better workout on the trail. Here in Orange County, N.Y., and North Jersey, we are fortunate to have many hiking trails nearby, one of them being the good ol’ Appalachian Trail. For anyone willing to drive a little farther, though, the George W. Childs Recreation Site in Dingmans Ferry, Pa., about an hour from the Pine Island/Warwick area, offers an easy 1.8-mile loop trail that winds around three waterfalls. There also are several picnic areas and benches here to stop at and just enjoy the surroundings. Wooden bridges throughout the area add to the picturesque views as well. The photos here are some of the images I captured during my time at this park last week.
