TANTALIZERS: HOW THE MIGHTY FELL When Tantalizer Eatery started at Festac Town Lagos in 1999, we were filled with joy because Mr Biggs then was messing up by serving tasteless food and pastries. Tantalizers sent Mr Biggs out of business in Festac Town Lagos and other places they competed. Today, the same Tantalizers is dead in Festac Town. This is my private analysis that will serve as lessons to business owners. 1. TAKING CUSTOMERS FOR GRANTED: The success of Tantalizers literally entered the head of the management. You have to beg to be served. The staff was so rude that they will insult you if you demand attention or explanation. 2. LOW QUALITY: It was my wife that first pointed out to their unbelievable low quality of the foods. The chicken parts looked like that of a pigeon suffering from kwashiorkor. 3. LACK OF INNOVATION: Even when they see Nigerians moving from fast foods to African foods, they stubbornly stick to fast food when THRILLERS in the same Festac was serving Ukwa, Ugba, Amara, bush meat and other home food. 4. UNNECESSARY FAST EXPANSION: Tantalizers have there big outlets in Festac in two years and many all over the country. There was no consolidation of their customer base as their profits were wasted on big expansion projects. 5. STOCK MARKET DISASTER: The company rushed to stock market to be registered as PLC with over one billion naira paid for the stocks. That was the day their malaria turned to terminal cancer. Government taxes and commissions for consultants must run into millions 6. BIG COMPETITORS: The coming of the big three to Festac was the last nail on the coffin of Tantalizers brand. TASTEE FRIED CHICKEN, SWEET SENSATION and KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (KFC) came with bigger spaces and better services and we all left Tantalizers in droves 7. SMALL COMPETITORS: Nigerians are now relaxing in beer palours, football fun sports, cinemas and shoprite shopping malls which make many to even shun eateries completely
