Friday Night Frights! Greetings and good Friday to you. Tonights tale of morbidity is my favorite film to star both Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, It also happens to be the last film to star both Masters of Horror. Released in 1945 it is the story of a surgeon who, along with his two assistants, conducts medical research by use of cadavers, Many of these corpses come into the Doctors possession by less than legal means by way of a certain cab driver (Boris Karloff) who moonlights (literally) as a grave robber at night, A young lame girl desperately needs surgery to regain the use of her legs, But , to perform the surgery the doctor needs more corpses to practice on. To fill the Doctors needs the grave robber resorts to murder. He then begins to blackmail the hapless doctor. In my humble opinion, Karloff absolutely steals the show in this film. His character is utter ruthless, and feels nothing but contempt for the medical men to whom he sells his ill gotten corpses. He sees them as hypocrites who will buy the bodies, knowing full well where they come from, but consider themselves better then him, He weaves a web of blackmail around them and greatly enjoys the power he has over them. As much as I enjoy the Frankenstein movies (and I do) I believe this is a much better demonstration of Karloffs acting prowess. So if you have nothing better to do tonight then grab a snack and snuggle up to that stolen corpse you have laying on the couch. Join me for The Body Snatcher!
