TBH statements like IIFYM still means mostly eating clean grind my gears. IIFYM means having used mathematics to estimate your nutritional requirements (of total energy, protein & dietary fats) and then having a plan to meet those requirements. Of course I should add, subject to monitoring your progress it is quite likely the informed coach or educated athlete will adjust those targets as they deem necessary to produce best results. The maths should give most people a reasonably accurate estimate to start with though. Now, its certainly not a terrible idea to meet those requirements with a choice of foods you feel is healthiest, but quite literally (subject to including your nations recommended minimum fruit and veg intake) all that matters is that you do indeed fit your macros. If you require 200 grams of carbohydrate per day it makes literally no difference where they come from. We need to stop viewing food choices as a moral issue, with clean choices that make you a good person deserving of good health and success in achieving your goal body, and bad choices for... other people. Its bullshit. It is entirely about energy balance and nothing else. I feel like some of the other IIFYM coaches know this is true but perhaps they dont quite have the testicular fortitude to come out and say it for fear of clean eating types judging them as undisciplined slobs eating junk food all the time. I dont really care what those pro-e/d jerkoffs think of me to be quite honest, so Ill keep telling it like I see it. Like it actually is.
