TBT - a tribute to Bessie “Barrel-Organ” and Seth “Magic-Lantern” Sykes who penned the chorus THANK YOU, LORD [for Saving my Soul]. It was first copyrighted in 1940 by the Scottish couple, but probably written over a decade earlier - according to online sources. There are verses to the chorus, but I wasn’t able to find the score, just the lyrics. Here is my feeble attempt at a tribute of Mr and Mrs Sykes’ well-known chorus. The Sykes were creative innovators as traveling evangelists and have an interesting story (be sure to read about their “magic lantern” and “barrel organ. Pinning such barrels was something of an art form, and the quality of the music produced by a barrel organ is largely a function of the quality of its pinning.
