#TBT I found this letter that dad (Gary Thomas) wrote to himself, I think, the day before I turned 13 years old. Its kind of long, but family and friends may enjoy it. On this the eve of my sons 13th birthday, we find ourselves becoming more established in Beckley. On his 10th birthday, the first in the tent in the backyard in Sissonville, who would have dreamed we would be here. But we like it, more and more every day. The routine on this birthjday is quite a bit different from the last 3...only one friend this year, Tim Ford, versus several in recent years for the tent parties. Steve and Tim went to the mall this afternoon. Judy Lambert Thomas, Heather Redden, and I joined them for dinner at Pizza Inn. They then went to see a movie, Back to the Future, and we picked them up at 9 and had Baskin Robbins ice cream cake together. Steve and Tim have plans to play video games through the evening and Tim is staying over. Steve is excited about his new youth class teacher at church this Sunday (me). He is getting braces on his teeth later this month. He has big blue eye and plenty of freckles. I cant convince him to comb his hair. He doesnt seem to care for girls yet, but thats coming I know. Hes becoming somewhat style conscious, likes new clothes, but still has to be reminded to take a shower. He loves baseball, the Atlanta Braves, and loves anything statistical baseball related. He pours over box scores, facts, figures, etc and does his own calculating and projecting. He is a pleasure to be around; pleasant, trustworthy, and watches his little sister, age 7, while I am at work and Judy is at Word First. He is level headed and has common sense. he is not crazy about work, but will work with some prodding, although he always looks for shortcuts. All in all he is a great kid. He seemed surprised when I told him I wouldnt take a million dollars for him. Hes going to make a mark on peoples lives...he sure has on mine.
