TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is now airing its annual tribute to stars who have passed during the year. This year more than ever, I am stunned by the number of old friends whose names and images appear in this yearly montage. I call them old friends because thats what they feel like. Many of you of a certain age feel the same. We note them as they pass during the year, but it isnt until the end of the year when you look back and realize just how many of them have left in just 12 short months. Here is a shortened list of the most recognizable names. A few may be obscure to some of you, but most of them were known by generations of us. Eli Wallach, Mickey Rooney, Sir Richard Attenborough, Maximillian Schell, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Andrew McLaglen, James Rebhorn, Bob Hoskins, Joan Rivers, Elaine Stritch, Ralph Waite, Lauren Bacall, Dickie Jones, Juanita Moore, Efram Zimbalist Jr., James Shigeta, Richard Kiel, Russell Johnson, Polly Bergen, Sid Caesar, Harold Ramis, Robin Williams, Ruby Dee, James Garner, and... Shirley Temple. I think of just how much amazing talent the world has lost this year and wonder what stars of today will be as fondly remembered as some of these seventy or eighty years hence. Alas, I fear not many.
