TCM was showing Nathan Juran movies all day--pretty much all of his fantasy and sci-fi films--except The Brain From Planet Arous (wherein an alien mind control parasite telepathically takes over nuclear scientist John Agar in a bid to conquer the world), and The Deadly Mantis. I love this movie. Unashamedly and without irony. I have no reasonable explanation as to why. There are no big-name actors, the pseudoscience is unusually ridiculous even for the genre and time period, the special effects are unremarkable, and there is way too much arctic and military stock footage. ON the other hand, the star is a three hundred foot long praying mantis that eats Eskimos and attacks the Washington Monument.
