TEACHERS PROTEST EXCESSIVE TAXATION “This is too much. The government which does not provide for decent salaries for its teachers and own employees is now imposing more taxes.” Said Benjo Basas, a public school teacher from Caloocan City and the National Chairperson of the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC). The group assailed the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for its aggressive taxation policies that according to them would further extract money from the poor, especially government employees and public school teachers. “These ‘saKIM policies’ that are meant to increase the revenues are definitely anti-poor and anti-worker.” Said Benjo Basas, a Caloocan City teacher and the group’s national chairperson. “The poor and the low income earner should be exempted from taxes.” He added. The TDC is one with the entire public sector in protesting BIR’s revenue memorandum order (RMO) 23-2014 which seeks to impose taxes on bonuses and other incentives for government employees. Last Wednesday, a group of government employees filed a petition in the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of the said memorandum. “The BIR should run after the crooks in the government, the rich tax evaders and the bosses of government corporations who receive fat bonuses and other perks, not the ordinary employees.” Basas exclaimed. “These people waste the taxes from our sweat and blood” The TDC supports Senate Bill 2146 filed by Sen. Sonny Angara as well as several legislative proposals intended to grant tax exemptions or reduction for teachers and other employees especially from their supposed bonuses and call for a stricter campaign not only in paid ads but more importantly in penalizing tax evaders and government crooks. “We believe that the court would grant the petition. However, if Henares is confident that she is just implementing the law, then something wrong with that law and it needs to be amended.” Basas ended. The TDC will stage a series of protests in government offices including the BIR, DBM and Congress to press for the enactment of the law as well as the granting of their P10, 000 across the board increase in salaries. #
