TEAM CANADA SECURES PIVOTAL WIN OVER LOCAL WHITE ROCK RENEGADES IN LAST ROUND ROBIN GAME OF CHAMPIONSHIP Next Game: Team Canada vs. Team USA at 8:30pm tonight at Softball City Surrey, BC – As the last game of round robin play at the 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship came to a close, Team Canada reaffirmed their defensive expertise, with a victory over the White Rock Renegades this afternoon. Karissa Hovinga posted a stellar pitching performance for Team Canada, with a one hit gem. Team Canada recorded a 10-0 victory and managed to secure a strong position heading into tonight’s playoff series. With a 7-0 record in round robin play, Team Japan leads the way heading into playoffs with a first place seeding. Finishing second is Team USA with a 6-1 record, Team Canada finishes third with a 5-2 record, and Team Mexico takes the fourth place seeding with a 4-3 record. The playoff series kicks off with the number one seed Team Japan facing off against the number four seed Team Mexico, tonight at 6:30pm at Softball City. The most anticipated game of the day is a rematch between Team Canada and Team USA. These fierce opponents faced off last night in front of a near capacity crowd, and although Team Canada brought forward outstanding game play with great performances by Jennifer Yee, Jenna Caira and Victoria Hayward, it wasn’t enough to subdue the power hitting of Team USA. With an opportunity to advance through page system championship draw, Team Canada is preparing to ramp up their offense and leave everything they’ve got on the diamond. Team Canada will play their first playoff game tonight at Softball City in South Surrey at 8:30pm, against Team USA. Team Canada vs. White Rock Renegades (10-0): The hometown White Rock Renegades couldn’t quite keep up with the strength and fluidity that Team Canada delivered this afternoon, ending in a 10-0 win for Team Canada. In this hard fought seven inning game, the stand out player was Team Canada pitcher Karissa Hovinga, who threw a shutout, allowed no earned runs, walked none, and struck out eight. The seventh inning brought a lot of action to the scoreboard with RBI singles by Kaleigh Rafter, Megan Gurski, Megan Timpf, Larissa Franklin, and Jennifer Yee. Team Canada’s win over the Renegades helped land them a third place seeding heading into tonight’s playoff game, where they will battle it out against the evenly matched Team USA. NJCAA All Stars vs. Spain Basque Country (13-3): The early domination by the NJCAA All Stars led to a huge victory over the Spain Basque Country team this morning, in a 13-3 win. The All Stars scored a two-run double by Brooklyn Clark, an RBI double and RBI single by Shelby Duncan, an RBI double by Courtney Shields, and an RBI single by Codi Covington, all in the first inning. Idoia Benito Lopez of Spain Basque Country proved to be an asset to her team during the game, with a single in the first and a double in the third. Team USA vs. White Rock Renegades (10-0): The White Rock Renegades were no match for the muscle and speed of Team USA this morning at Softball City. Team USA took an early lead with ten runs in the first three innings, and once again proved their prowess on offense. Valerie Arioto of Team USA scored a three-run home run in the first, and racked up five RBI’s on two hits. Pitcher Jolene Henderson managed to strike out four White Rock hitters, walked none and gave up no hits. The final score was 10-0 for Team USA. Team Japan vs. Team Mexico (10-0): The number one world ranked Team Japan faced off against Team Mexico this afternoon, recording a 10-0. This blowout came as an easy win for Team Japan, as they scored six runs in the first three innings, thanks to a two-run single by Minami Sato, a two-run home run by Sonoka Kuniyoshi, and a two-run home run by Nozomi Nagasaki. Team Japan’s pitcher Nozomi Ozaki delivered a stellar performance, allowing no runs on one hit, six strike outs and bases on balls. These two contenders will battle it out again in the first playoff game of the championship this evening at 6:30pm. The 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship is on now through July 21 at Softball City, Cloverdale Athletic Park, and Sunnyside Park in Surrey, BC.
