The somewhat cooler weather we are experiencing has inspired us to look at Today in History from a temperature perspective. It was today in 1950 that Harry Gold was sentenced to 30 years in prison for helping the Soviet Union to get US secrets. This was of course all part of the Cold War. 10 years later saw the first episode of Coronation Street on the nation’s TV screens. This long running programme is based in Weatherfield. Just a few birthdays to share today; in 1886 we welcomed the arrival of Clarence Birdseye who of course went on to become synonymous with the freezing of food. Jumping forward a few years to 1972 and Green Day drummer Tre Cool was born. He was also in a band called the Foxboro Hot Tubs who included in their number the multi-talented Jason Freese. Finally for today, just a year later in 1973 saw the arrival of Italian Footballer Fabio Artico who in a career spanning 19 years played over 500 competitive games.
