TEMPORARY PROTECTION VISAS (TPVs): TPVs replace Protection Visas - TopicsExpress

TEMPORARY PROTECTION VISAS (TPVs): TPVs replace Protection Visas (which are permanent), grant 3 years of protection at the end of which the reasons for protection are reviewed. Family reunion is not allowed. MENTAL HEALTH: TPVs have debilitating effects on the mental health of refugees as the threat of being forced to return home to the persecution they have escaped on the expiry of their TPV looms over them daily. TPVs prevent refugees from making meaningful connections with the community and heal trauma and psychological harm suffered at home and in detention. WOMEN & CHILDREN: As was seen in the early 2000s when TPVs were last implemented, the ban on family reunion resulted in a high increase of women and children taking life-threatening boat journeys to be reunited with family and safe from persecution. Family reunion program provides a safe passage for immediate family to join refugees in Australia. PARLIAMENT: The Coalition plans to re-implement TPVs. The Greens will oppose this in the Senate today. Labor has flagged it could back the Greens motion but it is still unclear. In the past, Labor has been strongly opposed to TPVs. theguardian/world/2013/nov/11/coalition-frustration-grows-as-labor-hints-it-may-block-tpvs-in-senate
