TENNIS: Cole Osborne of the Bayridge Blazers has advanced to the high school boys singles championship semifinals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tennis championships at York University in Toronto. Osborne has reeled off three consecutive victories over the first two days of the three-day event — 8-0 over Cameron Siou of White Oaks, 8-3 over Rohan Rakshit of Churchill and 8-1 over Caleb Weatherbee of Lindsay — to make it to a Wednesday semifinal match against Dylan Smith of Upper Canada College. The winner advances to the championship final while the loser drops back into the bronze medal semifinals. The only other Kingston-area entries still playing are the two Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers teams, who are on the consolation side of the bracket and are still in contention for bronze medals. Kristin O’Neil and Kelsey Tyerman lost their opening match 8-3 to Chinekwu Osakwe and Maggie Smith of Ridley College, but won their next two matches — 8-2 over Amanda and Melissa King of Bishop Allen and 8-6 over Karli Fiaes and Emily Seica of Christ the King — to make it into the third round of bronze play. Erin Brennan and Cassy Santoni have taken a somewhat similar path to the bronze third round. They lost 8-2 Jessica and Ellen Kawamoto of Westdale in the opening round, received a bye in the first round of bronze play, and then beat Osakwe and Smith of Ridley 8-4 in the next round. In high school girls singles play, Christina Yun of the Kingston Blues won her first match — 8-4 over Stephanie Marando of St. Joan of Arc — before losing her championship round of 16 match 8-2 to Christina Yao of Sinclair and then her bronze medal second-round match 8-2 to Ashleigh Brimo of St. Benedicts. Akahay Gupta and Jarryd Osborne of the Loyalist Lancers sandwiched a couple of close match losses around a bye in high school boys doubles. They dropped an 8-7 (7-5) decision to Albert Dorfman and Henry Zhu of Waterloo in their opening match, and then after a bye were downed 8-5 by Zach and Josh Bugden of Christ the King in the bronze medal second round. In high school mixed doubles action, Cole Miller and Sara Jane Pratt of the Napanee Golden Hawks lost their opening match, 8-4 to Stefan Ilincic and Chloe Duggal of London Central, and were eliminated with a tight 8-7 loss to Malcolm Turgeon and Sierra DiGiacomo in the first round of bronze medal competition.
