THAT HEART-SOOTHING MAGIC UP-BOW... .....what could I say...after playing it many times years ago, listening hundreds of interpretations...Erbarme Dich, mein Got, from the Matthäuspassion of Bach, the composition dictated by God to Bach, in the version of Richter/Töpper/Bùchner, reaches an undescrible intensity...In particular the violinist Bùchner, from the very beginning, with a magic up-beat played with angelic sweetness, without rushing and literally embracing the down-beat where the cry begins...has no match in all history of performing...And what to say about those slow appoggiature played by Bùchner...aren t them so clearly as Bach certainly intended? Have Mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! See here, before you heart and eyes weep bitterly. Have Mercy my God. These are the Arias words embraced by Bach music and by the extraordinary sensitivity of these performers...
