THE ACCUSATION OF UCC INVASION, WHY THE STORY IS NOT ADDING - TopicsExpress

THE ACCUSATION OF UCC INVASION, WHY THE STORY IS NOT ADDING UP Folks, in my last post about some students forming a defunct association, I made it clear that some of the post are not form students of our campus and hence the mischief of their comments. It is therefore not surprising that in not less than a week, students have started accusing students of other campus of sabotaging and misusing this platform. I was petrified when I read the post of my virtual friend Emmanuel Benle Reggie Bee (if only that is his true name), because such accusation has no basis to start with. The social media is a user friendly interface that allows one to interact with many users as long as one accepts such users upon their request. The administrator of the page has the prerogative to admit and reject same those request. But, upon what criteria is the administrator going to admit and reject such request? The number of students who apply to use the page are not identified with any such criteria, as in the use of PIN (Personal Identification Number), any registered default codes, or the ordinary known students index numbers and even their department to start with. The guilt is on those alleging same to prove this lame accusation. The problem lies squarely in the court of UEW students and administrators of the page to maintain standards to suit the users they so desire to entertain on this platform. We have failed to make relevant use of the page hence inviting needless and uncouth characters from the virtual environment to invade our homes. Some of the comments from students on this page, be they from UEW students or students from other campuses are repugnant and belittle our intellectual prowess in relation to the various course of our individual studies. I don’t want to believe for ones that the issue of prestige in education is still relevant in the scheme of affairs these days. The Adisadel’s, Opoku ware’s, Augustine’s, and what have you are just living on their past glories, and so is the case with our tertiary institutions. Besides, UCC and UEW are ascribed with different mandates per the skills and values each institution seeks to impart in its products. The issue of UCC students editing the grammar and syntax of UEW students is laughable. But it is a wake-up call and a challenge we must embrace moving forward. Language is a very powerful tool in communication, and therefore we must endeavour to sanitize our skills in that direction. The unbearable conduct of our students these days to use colloquial language in spoken form is the major reason for the poor grammatical blunder we commit on this platform. There is vast difference between spoken and written language. Any good communicator almost exhibits the quality of both. The rules of grammar and language usage are canny if one not well vest in its rudiments. Our lazy attitudes towards reading other published articles, journals, and relevant materials besides are usual course books is one reason for our poor control over the English language. The sad angle of the issue is that, students who are already deficient in the English language do not make a point to learn the correct construction, but rather resort to colloquial terms because to them it is business as usual. I am in a university so I can afford to speak pidgin language. How many of us can really boast of good dictionary on our study tables? Those of us who have are equally lazy to look up for the meaning of words we come across in our daily activities. Our vocabulary build-up is poor, and therefore we can hardly articulate our thoughts as we wish them to be expressed. I think this unwarranted attention and the tension emanating thereof are counter-productive and we must immediately stop before it blows up in our face. Restraining other users from the platform (as suggested by Felix Ankrah Ohms) is not the solution. We must be prepared as students to defend our honour and project the image of our school by diligently showing signs of seriousness and attaching importance to our actions and comments. The overall effect is that, inferiority complex and timidity is killing students of UEW. I have read in some quarters that, I didn’t apply to UEW but was offered admission to come and read this course or that. Inasmuch as how stupid those comments are, it shows how such people think in life. Perception is everything in life. What most of us on this platform don’t know is that, before UEW became a fully fledged university, all educational courses were certified by UCC. So, if our thinking is that UCC has no link with education, then we should re-think our stands. My certificate is important than a UCC product based on the class I graduate with and not the institution. The bias has existed because of favouritism in the Ghanaian environment. We all want to project our schools no matter how weak we might have contributed towards it growth. There are students who failed their courses in UCC and have run to UEW for cover and vice-versa. The argument should not be UCC students are better than UEW. Based on what criteria will one be justified to make such lame comments? We can interrogate the matter by throwing the challenge to our brothers and sisters in UCC to defend same those bragging right they so want to attract for themselves. The jokes, insults, innuendos, invectives and vituperative attacks on persons on this platform must rather be checked. Some of us have made a point to comment on almost on every post on this platform no matter how “silly” our comments are. We don’t read the posts before commenting. And even when we read, we don’t understand but we are quick to comment. That is not the hallmark of an intelligent persona. We should welcome students of all institutions to share in knowledge from broader spectrum rather than the pettiness with which we want to tackle this invasion allegation. The truth is, as we speak now; final year students from both universities are busily copying (plagiarizing) materials from each other to be submitted as their project work in partial fulfillment for the graduation. The pretense and ingenuity in UEW is becoming extremely annoying to some of us (the emphasis is mine) to start with. If you are a card bearing member of UEW and you feel your aspiration can not be achieved by been a product of the school, refer to the students’ handbook for the exit plan. Seize fire already! Return the hit if you can, but be mindful not sound abusive I shall return……………………………………………
