THE BAFFLING F1 SALARY PERMUTATIONS According to BUSINESS BOOK GP2014, the top salary earners in Formula 1 for the year 2014 are Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso; all on $31.7 million for the year. Next to them is Lewis Hamilton on $28.8 million (his Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg is 6th on $17.3 million). The lowest paid drivers in f1 for 2014 are the Caterham teammates Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson, who are both on $216,000 (this is still a good salary for most professions as it translates to about N36.7 million). This huge disparity is acceptable in F1 because the drivers usually have to justify their earning potential by winning races, finishing in podium places, scoring championship points for their teams, etc, which all translate to Hundreds of millions of dollars (even billions) for their teams. Knowing this then, this 2014 season must be like race after race of eggs in the face for four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel. If the above statement about returns for their teams are true, and he is earning a whopping $31.7 million dollars, whilst his new teammate, Daniel Ricciardo is way down in the earnings roll at $1.1 million dollars, it means that Vettel is earning almost 29 times Ricciardo’s wages, yet the young Aussie is sitting above him on the driver standings, with a lot more championship points – Ricciardo is 3rd in the 2014 drivers’ championship on 131 points whilst Vettel is 6th on 88 points (and both drive the same 2014 Red Bull Racing car!! THIS MEANS THAT VETTEL COSTS RED BULL $360,000 FOR EACH CHAMPIONSHIP POINT HE HAS MADE, WHICH IS 43 TIMES MORE THAN RICCIARDO COSTS HIS TEAM AT $8,396 PER POINT. SEBASTIAN VETTEL MUST FEEL LIKE RUNNING AND HIDING EVERY SINGLE RACE WEEKEND THIS YEAR – POOR GUY (WITH $31.7 MILLION). By this same analysis (earnings vs points scored) Raikkonen is costing Ferrari $1.17 million for every point he has scored. He is not the worst though. Even though Pastor Maldonado “only” earns $4.3 million a year, he is yet to score a championship point all season – therefore he is still costing his team ______________________________ (SOMEONE GIVE ME THE FIGURE PLEASE).
