THE BRISTOL CHANNEL FLOOD, January 20, 1607: 415 years ago today a high tide & 3m storm surge followed 3 days of severe gales in SW England. The surge tore up the Bristol Channel flooding low-lying Welsh and English lowlands in 12 feet of seawater, wiping out whole communities, their fields and their livestock. Up to 1500 people were drowned. Even Glastonbury, 14 miles inland flooded & the Somerset Levels were reclaimed by the sea! As the low pressure moved east, the east coast was flooded later that day. In 2005 2 experts claimed in a BBC documentary that this was in fact a Tsunami.
