THE BULAWAYO - CHRONICLE - 25th SEPTEMBER 1974. COLOUREDS FROM FORESTVALE MAY BE RESETTLED (Chronicle Reporter). PROPOSALS to buy out about 30 properties and resettle the entire Coloured community of Forestvale in a new area are under secret discussion by the Bulawayo City Council. The move is understood to have been prompted by the governments policy to house different racial groups in separate areas - Forestvale is flanked by two African townships. Asked to confirm the proposals, the mayor, Clr. C.M. Scott, said yesterday. There is no comment that I can make at this time. The matter is still under discussion and very confidential. However, the matter would be made public when the discussions were closer to finality, he said. Mr. J. van Beek, chairman of the Bulawayo Asian and Coloured Association - A Forestvale resident-confirmed the proposals. He said: I believe the government wants the council to implement the policy of segregated housing areas. TOWNSHIPS I have tried to quiz the town clerk on the matter, but I dont think their ideas have been put into firm proposals. Mr. van Beek said most of the Forestvale community would not oppose the plan. We are almost surrounded by African Townships. Luveve is on one side, and Njube on the other. It would be wrong to oppose something that is in the national interest. The council cannot force us out, but I think we would be willing to move if we were properly compensated. Mr. van Beek admitted he would be sorry to leave the area, which has been his familys home since 1934. It is understood that if the Coloured community is resettled elsewhere, Forestvale will be classified as an African area, allowing expansion of the townships.
