THE BULAWAYO - CHRONICLE - 8th OCTOBER 1979. $45 000 BURSARY TRUST FUND FOR CITY CHILDREN. (Chronicle Reporter) The Forestvale - Helenvale Association is to establish a bursary trust fund with $45 000 made up of compensation paid to it by Bulawayo City Council for expropriating its recreation centre and interest earned. The annual meeting of the association decided this yesterday. The chairman, Mr. Julius van Beek and the hon. treasurer, Mr. Edward Buys, assured the meeting that the bursaries would be for children of members. There are very few bursaries for our children, and this is why we invested our money in a building society, where it is accruing interest. SHOT IN THE ARM The annual interest on paid-up shares - about $3 000 - would be used for bursaries, Mr. van Beek said. Forestvale and Helenvale were expropriated in 1977. In January 1978 Mr. van Beek was shot in an armed burglary of his store at Forestvale. He told the meeting that the expropriation proceedings - including an appeal to the Compensation court - and his own injuries were the reason no annual meeting had been held for more than two years. To establish the trust fund and enshrine its purpose - to send children to college or university - the associations constitution is being amended. COURT AWARD The families who lived in Forestvale and Helenvale before the Council expropriated their homes now live in other suburbs. But, Mr. van Beek said, said they were still strongly linked as a community by the memory of their past hardships and struggles. The meeting was told by Mr. van Beek and Mr. Buys that the Councils initial offer that the Councils initial offer of $26 700 for the recreation centre was taken to the Compensation Court which awarded the association $41 000. Because the Council was rather slow in making the payment the award earned $2 600 in interest, Mr. Buys said. There was still a matter of court expenses to be decided and towards this $2 600 had been lodged with the associations lawyers. DONATIONS Mr. Buys asked for the meetings approval of donations of furniture and equipment from the Forestvale recreation centre to several good causes in and near Bulawayo, including Sacred Heart Home at Bushtick, the community of North Trenance, and the library at Mpilo Hospital. He gave particulars of money donations - of from $50 to $150 - to a few Bulawayo charities. The meeting gave its approval and his report with the accounts and balance sheet was carried. Mr. Buys was re-elected hon. treasurer and Mr. Selby Webb was re-elected hon. secretary. A second secretary, Mr. Michael Reid, was appointed to help with the increasing correspondence. A committee of eight was elected. At its first meeting it will elect the chairman and vice-chairman. The present vice-chairman is Mr. Clement Klein.
