THE CASE OF MYSTERIOUS DARK GLASSES It was one Saturday afternoon in mid November of the year 2013. With no appointments that day I was preparing my bag to leave when my attention was arrested by a mild knock that I received on the door of my cabin. The curiosity within me pounced up to discover the untimely visitor. Soon the door was unlocked and there emerged a sweet little girl with a mesmerizing smile decorated onto her face, along with a hijab scarf on head and dark glasses positioned onto her eyes. She was accompanied by her mother who appeared after her following her way into the cabin. My curiosity to know who they were was still left unfulfilled. I was just about to enquire when her mother unintentionally interrupted and broke her silence, and said, Lady: Namaste Sir, I am sorry sir we came without appointments, but I need to consult you for my daughter for her eyes…!!! The girl was still smiling and looking at me looking from those dark spectacle glasses. I was now more inquisitive and eagerly hunted to know the mystery behind these dark glasses. Me: Sure Mam..! How can I help you..? Why is she wearing these dark black glasses..? Lady: Sir, she cannot tolerate any sort of light, with any light entering her eyes; it causes redness of the eye followed by pain with discharges. The pain in eyes progresses to give rise to pain in head which is more in the right frontal lobe. The discharges, those appear are very offensive and smell like fish. There is intense itching in the eyes with redness and watery discharge. The discharges are more in right eye. Dirt accumulates at the medial corners of both the eyes which foul smells. Me: What else can you detail me? Lady: Sir, whenever she takes cold drinks or ice-creams or any cold food, she gets Cold and Coryza along with increased sensitivity to light. It is then followed by intense itching of the eyes and head pain. Because of her this problem, she cannot open her eyes in the morning when sun comes, without her glasses. She does not allow us to open the window curtains unless she is wearing her dark spectacles. Me: Could you please tell me something about her behaviour? How is She as a person? What are her likes and dislike? Lady: Oh Doctor She is very fearful. Even at night she wants dim light to be kept on. She can never stay in dark place. For example if she sleeps in bedroom she will keep the lights of hall on so that a reflection comes into her bedroom. She cannot sleep alone and would want someone to be with her. Sometimes she gets angry when we do not listen to her. She is mad for Ice-cream and if we resist she will not talk to us. She says “I won’t talk to you, I won’t study”. She loves ice-cream so much to the extent that she dreams of having ice-cream and visiting to natural scenic places like Kashmir. We do not allow her for ice-creams since every time she takes ice-cream or cold drinks all her complaints go worse. Me: What more can be detailed of about her? Lady: She loves to play hide and seek with small kids. She likes children’s and spends time playing with them. She is good in studies and is very talkative. She has many friends in school and in our society. She likes to play with dolls and kitchen set toy. She does not mind to share her toys with her friends. She demands to have pet dog but at the same time she is afraid of animals. She loves to get nicely dressed when going out. Cartoon serials are her life, watches them day and night. If there is thunderstorm or lightening she shuts doors and all the windows. Me: Can you elaborate her behaviour when she was Infant? Lady: Yes Dr I forgot to mention. When she was small she feared to almost all new people. She was not comfortable with them and does not used to go near strangers.
