THE CAUSES OF CAMPAIGNS AND ELECTORAL VIOLENCE IN LAPAI.... I strongly believe that campaigns and electoral violence that enropted between the supporters of HON. USMAN MAGAJI and HON. MOHAMMED NAKORJI NK in Lapai last week finds its root cause in condition occasioned by socio-economic injustice, political and zoning injustice and violence of basic human rights. CAMPAIGN VIOLENCE IN LAPAI COULD BE CAUSED BY: 1- Ignorance: Ignorance illiteracy is a major factor of campaign violence in Lapai, Niger state and Nigeria at large. Many are ignorance of what Democracy is all about. Due to ignorance many could mortage their lives for an aspirant because he cannot really think and discern what is good for himself. Generally speaking, the ignorance and the illiterates are being manipulated by the politicians. 2- Poverty: In Nigeria, poverty occasioned by economic injustice relegated the average Nigerian to a bottom of the social ladder. An amnesty international report (2005) declares that the right to health and the right to an adequate standard of living remain unfulfilled for many Nigerian. Since many Nigerians live on less than one US Dollar, their votes are easily bought by the politicians which breeds campaign and electoral violence. 3- Appeal to Sentiments: Ethnic and Religion violence constitutes a major weapon in the hand of power seeking politicians. The ruling class pits tribe against tribes and religious groups against one another. Ethnic violence and religious differences are therefore used to keep these politicians in power. 4- Elite Competition and Manipulation: This form of situation manifest itself during the clamor for political elective offices at the communal, local, state and national levels. A more disturbing trend is the hiring of thugs who are mainly youths to deal with perceived opponents or enemies. The elites due to their advantageous position in the society and unhealthy competition among them manipulate the sensitively of the youth for their selfish interest. LAPAI YOUTHS BE WISE!!!
