THE CHARACTER TRAITS OF FALSEHOOD (3) Jude 14-16 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him." These men are grumblers and fault-finders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage. (NIV) Enoch lived before the flood, in the seventh generation from Adam, in the godly line of Seth. Although his prophetic words are not recorded in Genesis, Jude saw that the words in the book attributed to Enoch, and well known to Jews at the time, exactly matched the teaching of Jesus. When Christ comes again with the holy angels (Mark 8:38), judgement will finally come to the world and the church; and people who were ashamed of the pure gospel will be rejected by the Lord. Instead of witnessing to the life of God in Christ Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, false teachers boast about their own activities, ideas and prayer life. They grumble and criticise people who are not like them and even speak harshly of the Lord who has come to save them, while, at the same time flattering people who agree with them. They are so arrogant that they think the Lord cannot deal with them. But they are catastrophically wrong. In a world which has become a market place of religious ideas it is important to remember that God, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is all-mighty. Nobody can stand against Him and succeed. False teachers, backslidden believers and spiritual rebels will all have to stand before the judgement seat of Christ, as will all of us. The time to prepare is now; repentance is the only way. “Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offences; then sin will not be your downfall.” (Ezekiel 18:30).
